Patchworks data model example

If the section above confused you... not to worry! Pictures are worth a thousand confusing words. In this section we will take one block from a sample data set and follow the relationships between each of the core files that relate to our Block.

The block we have selected from the sample data set has the identification label of 27. The block was selected in the Map Viewer by using the Query tool. The attributes related to this Block (and all blocks) are found in the Block Table using the Table Viewer.

  1. Start Patchworks with the sample data set (see the Quick Tour section for more detailed instructions).

  2. Click once on the Seral Stages map layer in the Legend control panel. The border will appear raised when selected.

  3. From the main tool bar select the Query Tool to open the dialog.

  4. In the expression box enter the following SQL-like expression:

    	      ( GRIDCODE = 27 )

and click New Set to run the query.

  5. To locate block 27 we can use the Zoom to Selected tool. Click the Zoom to Selected button on the Map Viewer toolbar to zoom in on block 27.

You can view the contents of the CSV data files using a spreadsheet application such as Microsoft Excel, a database application such as Microsoft Access or with a simple text editor such as Notepad. In most cases double-clicking on a CSV file name will open it using the default application.
