Manually applying treatments

Patchworks allows you to manually design a treatment timing and intensity regime, or you can let the scheduler devise a treatment scenario that best achieves your combined goals, or you may use both techniques simultaneously. We may want to let the scheduler allocate the treatments but do a few manual adjustments. To explore this further let's apply a management treatment to our previously selected block. We will apply the treatment at 100 years into the future, with the result that our block will appear visually disturbed for the 30 years following when the treatment is applied.

[Note]Note
  1. Go back to the Map Viewer and return to our selected block. Remember that we had to unselect all records to calculate our summary of VQO areas. You will need to repeat the previous steps (the section called “Exploring the stand attributes in the Table Viewer”) using the query tool and the zoom to selected features in order to select the block and zoom in to a close up view. When you have done this your window should look like Figure 8, “Zoom to selected features.”.

  2. Make sure that the Seral Stage theme is selected in the legend and right-click on the selected polygon to open a popup menu.

[Note]Note
  1. Choose the "View and Edit Treatments" option from the menu to open the Treatment Editor for block 3517. A window should appear that is similar to Figure 12, “The Treatment Viewer for block 3517.”.

  2. In the upper line chart section of the Treatment Editor, move the mouse out 100 years (X axis units are years in the future). Notice in the bottom half of the Editor the age variable indicates 172. As you move the mouse back and forth over the line chart the attributes in the lower half of the panel will update to reflect forecast values.

  3. Click with the right mouse button in the line chart area to display the treatment options for this block at 100 years in the future (make sure the mouse is positioned over year 100).

After right-clicking in the managed area line chart, the treatment viewer will pop up a menu that indicates the avaiable treatments for a selected block at the selected time.

[Note]Note
  1. A menu will pop up. The only treatment available for our block at this time is CC (ie. clearcut). Click on the CC menu item to select this treatment. The products generated by the application of this treatment are displayed to the right of the yellow line.

  2. A vertical line will appear indicating the timing of the treatment. Keep the mouse hovered over this line so the age value in the lower pane indicates 0. Your pane will look like Figure 13, “Results of treatment to block 3517.”. The indicators to the right of the line show the consequence of the management treatment in terms of volumes harvested and areas treated. Treatment cost and product value information would also show up here if we had defined them in the dataset.

Figure 13. Results of treatment to block 3517.

After selecting a 'CC' treatment for block 3517, the resulting products are added and feature attributes are adjusted.

Notice how the curves in the line chart are reset as the stand responds to a clearcut treatment. The line above year 100 indicates the timing of the treatment. In the product description to the right of the treatment indicator, the listing shows that the harvest treatment yielded 206.71 m3/ha of conifer and 5.85 m3/ha of deciduous volume. If you move the mouse to the right of the yellow treatment timing indicator (year 100) you will observe that the feature.Visual.disturb attribute has a value of 1.0 for 30 years after harvest.

[Note]Note
  1. All underlying data structures in Patchworks that keep track of stand conditions, treatments or responses are linked, therefore the treatment we have just applied will show up immediately in the Map and Table Viewers in period 20.

If we went back into the Table Viewer at period 20 our block would now have a CURRENTTREATMENT value of 'CC' and product attributes showing the amount of volume harvested.

  2. Click the Unselect Records button on the Table Viewer toolbar. In the Map Viewer, turn on the Seral Stage layer, turn off the VQO layer and move ahead to Period 20. Our block is now displayed in Yellow, representing a stand in the Regeneration stage of development.

  3. Observe the Target Charts for the conifer harvest and the 1-MI2 VQO area in Figure 14, “Targets achieved by harvesting block 3517.”. Notice the change in the value that has occurred in period 20 (harvest volume) and period 20-25 (VQO). The harvest target has increased by 5498 m3 and the VQO account increased by 26.598 ha.

Although we have manually applied a treatment, that doesn't mean it is permanent. When the scheduler is active it may think it has a better solution and remove or change the timing we have chosen in order to achieve an even better solution. You can make your manual allocations 'off limits' to scheduler changes, by clicking on the box in the "AVAILABLE" column in the block attribute table so that it is unchecked for that block. There are a number of subtle issues regarding availability and you can read more about block availability in the section called “Adjusting Block Eligibility using the Timing Constraint Editor”.
