Generating a Road Model

With your spatial dataset complete we can link the Patchworks road network your blocks. The road network shapefile has already been created for you in this Quick Tour however to learn more about preparing your own road network see Road Networks. A Patchworks road network must be linked with each block in your dataset to provide the harvested products with a route to the mill destinations fed by your planning area. If you change your block configuration you must link your final road network again using the Build Roads Segments tool.

The Patchworks road model describes the vertices, segments, linkages and destinations and how these relate to each other and the blocks in the dataset. These data files are generated using a simple data prep tool once your block shapes and final road access files have been determined. To build the roads we will need:

We have everything we need in our Quick Tour III workspace so let's begin!

  1. In the Data Prep section of the Application Launcher choose the Build Road Segments tool (first on the list!) and click 'Go' to open.

  2. Navigate to the block dataset that you create previously in this Quick Tour: QuickTourIII\blocks\blocks.shp.

  3. Navigate to the mill shapefile in the following location: QuickTourIII\roads\mill.shp

    This is a simple point file that includes two point locations and account labels for Mill1 and Mill2.

  4. The road dataset can be found in the following location: QuickTourIII\roads\access.shp.

    This shapefile is the final access file and includes both the existing roads in the unit as well as some candidate roads generated for future use. Each segment has cost information associated with it to describe the hauling, maintenance and construction costs (see Road Networks for more information).

  5. Click 'Next' when all required files have been found.

  1. In the 'Column Names' dialog choose the unique labels for the blocks and road segments and cost column.

    1. Block label = BLOCK

    2. Road label = ACCESS_

    3. Cost Column = HAUL

  2. Finally, choose a location to output the road data files that will be generated (either create a new folder or navigate to the roads folder in the QuickTourII workspace.

  3. Click Finish when all parameters have been entered to run the 'Build Road Segments' tool and generate all the required CSV files.

We now have all the necessary data files required for our model, what we don't have is a way to load them into the model to take a look. To load our newly created dataset we need to construct a PIN file that will reference the location of our files. Continue on to the next section to create a basic PIN file using the PIN Builder and load all your work into the model to take a look.
